Tool 1Communication map, child by child
The single card for the children in the situation: fill it in once and reuse it in the conversations and the survey. One row per child. The biological parent stays on the front line with their own children.

Stance: welcomes / resists / ambivalent. · Who initiates: the parent concerned, or the couple. · Channel: visit, call, video, message, or a written note (useful for those far away). · Next step: a call, a visit, an invitation, a written note, or simply giving it time.
Tool 2The ground rules
The biological parent stays on the front line with their own children; the new spouse does not speak in their place.
You do not parent or correct an adult: the new spouse offers a respectful presence, not authority.
Answer the substance, not the tone. Behind the anger there is almost always a fear: being forgotten, seeing the late parent erased, money.
Never defend yourself by attacking the late parent or the former spouse.
Do not turn the children who welcome it into messengers or into arguments against those who resist.
Hold a united front as a couple, without outbidding or taking sides against the other's children.
Aim for the open door, not victory. Patience here is counted in years.
Tool 3Conversation guides · what opens, what closes
For the hard moments that keep coming back. Adapt them to your own words · the spirit matters more than the letter.
Tool 4Listening · the basic posture
Before answering or convincing, listen. Four movements, in order:
Receive without defending yourself · let them speak to the end.
Reflect back: "if I understand you, what bothers you is…"
Name the emotion: "you're afraid that…", "you're angry because…"
Validate the feeling without giving up the decision: "what you feel is right, and our decision stands, with respect."
Never argue to dismantle the resistance. A resistance that is acknowledged loosens; a resistance that is contradicted hardens.
Tool 5Distance · the children in mainland France
A regular rhythm of calls or video, decided and kept, rather than contact at the mercy of moods.
Do not save the important news for the face-to-face of those nearby: the far-away ones would hear it second-hand and feel sidelined.
Include them in decisions and events, even if they cannot come.
A written note, personal, carries far: at a distance, the written word says what the call forgets.
Tool 6Follow-up over time
Positions change. To reread from time to time, to note the road travelled and the next step, without pressure.

These tools are aimed at adult children. For minor children, communication is a matter of co-parenting and authority, and is worked out differently.
